On May 2nd, 2019, as a lead up to Mental Health Week, some classes participated in a “Managing Powerful Emotions” workshop facilitated by Lillian Gudmunson (Transitional Aged Youth program) and Deb McGuire (Youth in Transition Case Worker ). Students explored emotions, and the functions they serve, as well developing emotional literacy skills. They discussed dealing with a crisis, and what happens when we can’t tolerate distress. The idea of “distress tolerance kits” was introduced to show how we can use distraction (in the short term) to help manage a crisis. The concept of Mindfulness was also explored, and students were introduced to a mindfulness of breath practice, and some Apps for Mindfulness.
