Anna Graham and Jane Curtis, in Grades 9 and 10 respectively, are going to the Canada Wide Science Fair to be held in Fredericton, NB in May 2015 as two of four members of the Rideau St. Lawrence Science Fair team.  Anna Graham will be presenting her project on Lenz’s Law and Jane Curtis will share her learning about Gel Electrophoresis.

They are but two of a truly enthusiastic team of eight Grade 9 and 10 students from Carleton Place High School who presented their science projects at the Rideau St Lawrence Science Fair in Brockville on Friday April 10. The enthusiasm and the quality of their work impressed the judges so much, that Carleton Place High School won the Secondary School Achievement Award for 2015. The fair included 44 projects from schools in the region.

The following students won in many different categories.

  • Intermediate Chemistry 1st – Jane Curtis 2nd – Anna Graham and 3rd-Jessica Stevens. Tied for 4th – Tori Wood and Emily Penz
  • Intermediate Human Studies 1st – Ella Wiggins 2nd – Rachel Murphy and 3rd – and Shamus Merkley

Special Awards:

  • Jessica Stevens: Intermediate Product Analysis and Development Award
  • Ella Wiggins: Intermediate Life Science Award
  • Anna Graham: Intermediate Engineering Award
  • Jane Curtis: Intermediate Chemistry Award and Intermediate Biology Award

This is the first year for many years that so many CPHS students have participated in the science fair.  The Science Department chose Science Fair as their strategy for the CPHS theme of increasing relevance and student engagement for students. All Grade 9 and 10 students taking science completed a Science Fair Project as part of their science course and presented them at four mini science fairs held at the school between January and March.  Students were encouraged to represent CPHS at the RSLSF with obviously stunning results.
