CPHS Drama Inspired by Provincial Showcase

May 15, 2018 No Comments

Carleton Place High School Drama students have just returned, full of inspiration and a deeper love of the performing arts, after spending 5 days in Cambridge at the National Theatre School Drama Festival Provincial Showcase 2018.

After winning “Outstanding Production” awards at both the District and Regional levels, this group of 20 students was invited to showcase their work at the Provincials. With only 12 schools performing (out of the province’s 350+ competing productions), it was clear that this level would show high level, world class theatre. We were not disappointed.

Schools from around Ontario showed their creativity and theatrical skills in all areas of production: incredible technical elements, Commedia del’Arte masks, puppets, epic theatre for change on challenging issues, and original student creations.

The Carleton Place production brought the audience to tears of laughter, and then to their feet with a standing ovation, honouring the comedic talents of our whole group. This was acknowledged by the Executive Director of the National Festival, Wayne Fairhead, who welcomed our group personally- noting that it was Carleton Place High School’s first time ever at the Provincial level, and he hoped it would not be the last. Similarly, the adjudicator, Erin Brubacher, commended us for our work, rewarding the ensemble at the awards ceremony on May 12th with the Award of Excellence for “Theatrical Joy”- noting that our team’s positivity, collaboration, support of others, and love for one another was apparent in our production, and she felt it when sitting in discussion with us for our adjudication. She commented that this is truly what theatre is about, and that this love of performing arts must be nurtured.

Students learned from professionals at workshops, and from peers in other shows, and have returned with a tool belt of strategies and a head full of inspiration and dreams.

Thank you to the chaperones who’s support made the trip possible. And thank you to the students in the drama group- Mrs. Mortimer could not have asked for a more fantastic group or a more positive experience for all! Congratulations!
