CPHS Bears Girls Hockey Find Success in Pre-Season Tournament

The CPHS Girls Hockey Bears came out of hibernation to face off their season at the Arnprior District High School Girls Hockey Tournament yesterday.  CPHS iced a full roster of 15 skaters and a goalie, including a good mix of energetic juniors and experienced seniors.

In their opener, the Bears stormed the ice to face the Bishop Smith Crusaders. Despite goaltender Nora Bennett kicking out shots the way pinball flippers kick out balls, the Bears trailed 1-0 after the first half. Early in the second half the Bears tied it up when Erika Blanchard poked in a loose puck from the goalmouth, with Emily Puckett getting the assist. The game remained tied until late when Bishop Smith fell on their sword by taking a penalty. Leading a crusade of their own, the top line of Baili Garraway, Hailey Romain and Avery Billing led the siege with Hailey Romain delivering the fatal blow, on the powerplay, with 9 seconds left to play.

Up next in back-to-back games were the Arnprior Redmen. Once again, despite the best efforts of goaltender Bennett, the Bears fell behind 1-0 in the first half. Halfway through the second half, with Avery Billing serving a coincidental minor for roughing, Jenna Watson moved up into the RW slot on the top line. She made an immediate impact as Baili Garraway potted a goal with assists from Watson and center Romain. Despite late pressure from the Bears, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

After a lunch break the Bears were back at it for their final game against the Renfrew Raiders. The only raid was on the RCI defense as the Bears played  most of the game in the Renfrew zone, plundering 5 goals in the process.

The Bears regular season starts next Wednesday with tournament games against Smiths Falls, Saint Johns and Almonte.
