Annual Staff Student Softball Game

June 24, 2019 No Comments

June 17th, being Monday of the final week of classes, could only mean one thing – it was time for the annual Teachers vs. Grade 12s softball game at R.J. McLaren Field. A large group of grade 12s arrived at 2:30 and played catch to warm up their arms. They should have done some neck stretches instead as they would spend much of the next hour watching balls fly over their heads.

The teachers casually rolled in over the next 10 minutes or so. This group of veterans was looking to make it 2 wins in-a-row after a rare loss in 2017.

The grads struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first to make it 1-0. Mr. Brooks took the mound and threw a meatball that Mr. Belisle drilled to right field in the bottom half, legging out an inside-the-park homerun to tie the game. Mr. Lieff doubled and scored as the teachers added 3 more runs to make it 4-1. They held the grads with solid defense then added 2 more runs in the second to make it 6-1.

In the next inning, with Mrs. Biggs on base, Mr. Lieff stepped up and blasted a 2-run homerun to left-centre, his second in as many years, and the teachers added another run to take a commanding 9-1 lead.

The grads scratched out a run to make it a 9-2 in the top of the 4th. In the bottom of the 4th with a runner on, Mr. Belisle crushed a pitch over the right field fence and the teachers added another to take a commanding 12-3 lead. After 4 ½ innings the grade 12s cried “uncle” and another teacher win was in the books.

There was a great staff turnout including Mr. Belisle, Mr. Bhathal, Mr. Brooks, Mr. Falcioni, Mr. Lieff, Mr. Lovell, Mr. Smith and Mr. Strachan, as well as Mrs. Anderson, Ms. Biggs, Mrs. Kennedy, Mrs. Kirk, Mrs. Newton and Mrs. Puckett, with Mrs. Hicks cheering from the stands.

Grade 11s: rush down to guidance and add a couple Crossfit classes. Sign up for the baseball team in the spring to add some polish to your game. The teachers are already planning their 3-peat next year.

– Mr. Lieff
